This year was back to very cold weather but a hardy bunch of athletes showed up to compete. The year was notable as a local choir had uncovered an early version of Handel’s “Messiah”. To their astonishment the “Hallelujah” chorus was replaced by “Rutabaga!” they added some of their own lyrics to localize the newly uncovered piece…the public debut of this piece was heard to the delight of the crowd!
A very colorful field of athletes as usual. Tom “Mantooth” Mansell, a Cornell grad student, took the gold medal. Ray Schlather of Ithaca took second while markets own David Kingsbury took the bronze medal. Ray became the first person to ever medal in more than one year as he also stood upon the medal stand in 2006. “Mantooth” was one lucky winner. His first rutabaga tossed hit a post and broke into 2 pieces. Crowd sentiment felt he deserved another toss and a fresh rutabaga was granted by the refs. Tom made this one count…he planned to celebrate the “swede” taste of victory by eating his rutabaga that evening!
In the Turnip Toss, Zeke Lawrence of Ithaca took the gold, Phoenix Uticone took silver while Henry Tuori took the bronze. Zeke’s inspiring, now famous post victory words have made him a local folk hero. We are sure to see more of Zeke in the future.
